چکیده

Individuals with bulimia nervosa (BN) have a very high lifetime prevalence of major depression (Hatsukami et al 1984; Hudson et al 1987), an important consideration when interpreting biological studies in BN. Another potential issue is that many BN patients experience "reversed symptoms" such as hypersomnia and hyperphagia when depressed (Lam et al 1991); to date, there is a dearth of research on possible neuroendocrine changes associated with these "reversed" symptoms. We report here an unanticipated finding of a strong negative relationship between plasma cortisol levels and "reversed" symptoms of depression, in particular hypersomnia and carbohydrate craving, in a small sample of BN patients.

Bulimia nervosa--a primary defect in the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis?

Bulimia nervosa has been associated with impaired satiety, decreased resting metabolic rate and abnormal neuroendocrine regulation. The aim of this study was to investigate the diurnal cortisol secretion and the pituitary-adrenal response to corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) in subjects suffering from bulimia nervosa. Eight female subjects with remitted bulimia nervosa, ages 24-56, and 8 se...

Enhanced cortisol suppression in eating disorders with impulsive personality features.

Evidence of both blunted and enhanced cortisol suppression with the dexamethasone test (DST) is available in eating disorders (ED), suggesting that different subtypes of ED might be characterized by distinct neurobiological stress response dysfunctions. Other evidence indicates that ED patients with impulsive clinical features might have enhanced cortisol suppression similar to patients with im...

Circulating leptin in patients with anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa or binge-eating disorder: relationship to body weight, eating patterns, psychopathology and endocrine changes.

A decreased production of leptin has been reported in women with anorexia nervosa (AN) and has been attributed merely to the patients' reduced body fat mass. The extent to which eating patterns, purging behaviors, psychopathology and endocrine changes may contribute to the genesis of leptin alterations has not been deeply investigated. Therefore, we measured plasma levels of leptin, glucose and...
